05 / 03 / 2020

A panel on the competitiveness of Russian paints and coatings has taken place within Interlakokraska 2020 at the initiative of the NIITEKHIM Technical and Economic Research Institute and Expocentre AO.

Centrlack Association head Gennady Averyanov acted as the moderator of the debate involving representatives of the regulatory agencies, the expert community and manufacturing enterprises.

Anna Trofimova, an expert of the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade's Department for the Chemical and Technological Industry and Bio-Engineering Technologies, told the panel participants about the pending update of the import substitution plan and measures to support paint and coating industry enterprises.

Head of the NIITEKHIM Market and Chemical Industry Development Department Galina Zhigareva assessed the current condition and prospects of the Russian market, as well as results and outlooks for exports and the substitution of imports. She noted positive dynamics of the paint and coating market. According to NIITEKHIM, production has grown 14% over the past three years. More than 110 major companies make 60%-70% of all products.

Most products of the Russian enterprises go to the domestic market. Exports are growing but very slowly, she said. Exports increased 11% by volume and 16% by price over the reporting period. Russian paints and coatings are mostly purchased by CIS member states. Imports of all kinds of paints and coatings have slightly reduced, but NIITEKHIM expects the share of imports on the domestic market to dip under 20%.

Diana Kudryashova, an expert of the NIITEKHIM Department for Foreign Economic Integration of the Chemical Complex, described the situation on the global paint and coating market. She indicated a strong market consolidation, growing digitalization of production and green technologies, increased investments in the research and development of new products, modernization, and increased output of paints and coatings as main development trends.

Heads of Russian exporting enterprises, which took part in the discussion, told the audience about experienced problems and impediments to exports of Russian-made paints and coatings.
